On the 10th of October, the 13th grade Protestant Religious Education class went on an exciting excursion to Landau. Nine students and their teacher Mrs Tromp were invited by the Society for Christian-Jewish Cooperation. The event, which was themed „Jewish Life in Landau“, provided our students with insights into the history and culture of our region.
A special focus of the conference was on the role of Jewish wine merchants. In one of the presentations, given by Felix Maskow, the „History of Jewish Wine Merchants in Landau“ was highlighted. Here, the participants gained insights not only into the economic upswing of the city but also into the architectural and urban significance of the Jewish wine warehouses along the ring roads of Landau.
Another presentation was given by Dr. Christoph Krieger, who addressed the „Elimination of Jewish Wine Trade in the Third Reich.“ He also discussed the racial mania and the Nazi propaganda related to wine.
The lectures of the day culminated in a final discussion round with a special guest: Ruth Landy. She is a granddaughter of the former wine merchant from Landau Heinrich Levy. Her presence and words were the emotional highlight of the event. The American reminded everyone of the importance of preserving democracy – not only in Germany but also in the United States. Her family was expelled and expropriated during the time of National Socialism. Ruth Landy emphasized the significance of freedom, which all people should value and protect.
This excursion not only provided our students with historical knowledge but also a deeper understanding of justice, tolerance, and the protection of democracy. We are grateful for the opportunity to have participated in such an enriching event. We hope that the impressions of the day will accompany our students in their future lives.”
